Few things are more frustrating than having full Wi-Fi signal bars but still experiencing slow internet, buffering videos, dropped calls, or unreliable smart home devices. The reason is often not the internet connection itself. It is the way the network has been designed.

What Is a Mesh WiFi System?

A mesh system typically consists of multiple WiFi access points communicating with each other wirelessly to extend coverage throughout a property.

They can be an excellent solution where installing network cabling is not practical.

However, there is an important limitation.

With a wireless mesh network, each access point passes data to the next over WiFi. This can improve coverage and reduce congestion compared to a single router, but because the access points also use WiFi to communicate with each other, some of the available bandwidth is used for this connection.

If the connection between two access points is also weakened by distance, walls or interference, the amount of data that can be passed along can be reduced.

So, if one access point receives 600 Mbps but can only send 200 Mbps to the next access point, the second access point can only provide up to 200 Mbps to the devices connected to it.

This can lead to:

  • Reduced speeds

  • Inconsistent coverage
  • Challenges when supporting large numbers of devices

With a hardwired network, every access point has its own direct connection back to the network. Instead of sharing and repeating the signal, each access point receives the full available bandwidth, resulting in faster, more reliable WiFi throughout the property.
